BSA Citizenship in the Community

Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge

Please note this Blog is meant to help my own students to be able to earn this Merit Badge. This Blog is ran and managed by the scouts themselves plus all members of our family. We are currently studying the same subjects in our homeschool. The content in this blog is not attended to replace BSA materials but rather to organize all our materials into one place. We attend as a family to add photos, videos, youtube videos, and any other content we can find that relates to this subject below! I hope this can help your scout! Our scouts are new to scouting.  Have any comments to share or suggested changes?

Archaeology
W orksheets Archaeology

Requirements for the Archaeology merit badge:

  1. Tell what archaeology is and explain to your counselor how it differs or relates to other fields of study such as anthropology, geology, paleontology, and history. Explain how archaeology is different than artifact collecting or treasure hunting.
  2. Describe each of the following steps of the archaeological process: site location, development of background research and a research design, site survey and fieldwork, artifact identification and examination, interpretation, preservation, and information sharing.
  3. Describe at least two ways in which archaeologists determine the age of sites, structures, or artifacts. Explain what absolute dating and relative dating are.
  4. Learn about a combined total of five archaeological sites located both within and outside the United States.
    1. For EACH site you research, point it out on a map and explain how it was discovered. Describe some of the information about the past that has been found at each site. Explain how the information gained from the study of these sites answers questions that archaeologists are asking and how the information may be important to modern people. Compare the relative ages of the sites you research.
    2. Choose ONE of the sites you picked and give a short presentation about your findings to a Cub Scout pack, your Scout troop, your school class, or another group.
  5. Do the following:
    1. Learn about the federal laws and international conventions that protect archaeological sites. Find out if your state, county, or local government has regulations that apply to archaeological or historic sites.
    2. Identify a national, international, or local organization that helps to protect archaeological sites.
  6. Do the following:
    1. Explain why it is important to protect archaeological sites.
    2. Explain what people should do if they think they have found an artifact.
    3. Describe the ways in which you can be a protector of the past.
  7. Do ONE of the following and discuss your findings with your counselor:
    1. Visit a museum to observe how artifacts aid in conveying history.
    2. Present to your counselor a significant family artifact/heirloom and discuss its history.
    3. Make a list of the trash your family throws out during one week. Discuss with your counselor what archaeologists might learn about you and your family if they found your trash a thousand years from now.
  8. Do either A or B of the following:
    1. With your parent’s and counselor’s permission, assist a qualified archaeologist for at least eight hours with a project being worked on. Projects may include surveying, site monitoring, site stabilization, excavation, laboratory analysis, use of digital archaeological technology, or public outreach. Describe your involvement in the project, what you learned about archaeology, and the steps of archaeological inquiry.
Note: Visiting an archaeological site will require advance planning. An archaeological site during study can be a dangerous place. While there, you will need to closely follow the archaeologist’s directions and comply with all the safety procedures. Be aware of the changing conditions at the site.
    2. With your counselor’s approval, take part in a simulated archaeological project designed by a qualified archaeologist. The project must include the use of a simulated archaeological site including artifacts and features for the site. Using the steps of archaeological inquiry, analyze the “artifacts and features” and document the spatial relationships of the “artifacts and features” at the simulated site. Explain how the environment and time can affect the interpretation of an artifact and the overall archaeological site. Tell how you would share the results of your analysis with other researchers and the public.
Note: To find out how to make a simulated archaeological site, talk with a professional archaeologist, trained avocational archaeologist, museum school instructor, junior high or high school science teacher, advisor from a local archaeology society, or other qualified instructor.
  9. Under the supervision of a qualified archaeologist or instructor, do ONE of the following:
    1. Help prepare an archaeological exhibit for display in a museum, visitor center, school, or other public area.
    2. Use the methods of experimental archaeology to recreate an item or to practice a skill from the past. Write a brief report explaining the experiment and its results.
  10. Research a group of people who lived in your area more than 100 years ago. Find out about their ways of life, including housing, clothing, arts and crafts, tools, trade and markets, rituals and religions, and diets, and their relationships with other groups of people in the area. Describe what you would expect to find at an archaeological site where these people lived. Explain how these people influenced your current community.
  11. Identify three career opportunities in archaeology. Pick one and explain how to prepare for such a career. Discuss with your counselor what education and training are required, and explain why this profession might interest you.

Our Scouts Specific Merit Badge Online Class:

The original e-mail assignment!

✅ Step 1: Get approval from your personal troop.

Step 2:  Download the REQUIREMENTS listing for the badges being offered.
Review the requirements for PUBLIC HEALTH (page 3).  Those that are in darker text will be covered during each online session or be part of a focused activity you will do at home; requirements in lighter text will either not be covered, or will require follow-up work after sessions are complete.  Our sessions will only cover 80%-90% of the requirements...it is up to YOU to complete this badge.
Step 3:  Familiarize yourself with city, county, or state health agency (Req 7b)
Florida:
Other States:
Complete the Req 7-PH Online Form:
Step 4:  GOOGLE!  Do a search for “public health” and spend some time reading a bit more about current events and how public health impacts our community, country, and world.
Step 5: Join our PBS Online Study Class!
Click the link at the bottom of the pop-up window that says "I need to sign up!" and create a user name.
Enter your name (it will only require your first name*) and join the class.
You will get an assignment during Session 1 by e-mail that will use this class portal.
*If you have multiple Scouts in one household, make your name YOUR LAST NAME and the word “Family” so all Scouts get credit.
NOTE:  If this does not work for you, do NOT worry!  I will go over this tool during day 1 of the Course, so do NOT PANIC!

When you sign into each day’s session, you will be able to hear and see the presenter.  You will also be able to TYPE questions on a chat field that the presenter will be able to answer.  You will be given a brief “tutorial” on how to use the online tools to complete activities and tests throughout each session.  Your participation and use of these resources will be important to your completion of requirements during each session.  Failure to participate during sessions and/or failure to complete assigned tasks between sessions will limit the number of requirements you will be given credit for.
A video will be provided after each day’s session for you to review after as needed; missed sessions due to conflicts can be “made up for” by watching that day’s video, but daily tasks MUST be completed for credit!
You will receive more reminders on these items (and maybe some additional helpful “tips” and resources) by e-mail between now and Monday.  Please plan on being ON TIME for the start of your first Session.

✅ Day 1 Online Class was a challenge:

This was DinoScout's First Merit Badge Class. She has earned Merit Badges before yet never in a class setting she learned today that online lectures mean just sitting and listening. She did have fun trying to quickly respond to questions asked, she hoped to answer before the other scouts. Both scouts were extremely happy to have the answer read aloud by a speaker. Artyscout found online classes strange yet fun; he has always attended classes in person during a camp. The scouts have a decent amount of class research homework and even a project. I believe the workload is a great balance for these homeschooling children to learn how to do tasks on a set time table. We have been exploring website after website learning about safety... The children had no idea we already practiced so many public health habits. They're excited about how different this Merit Badge is since it is online. The children worked on there own to do these Merit Badges; I just sat back and recorded what they did. I'm grateful that the kids remember that they can save pdf documents I was able to save there links because of it.
