Math in Your Kitchen: Fun with Food Fractions

https://nepris.com/sessions/session/detail/71524

Access Code: wqurt-xw

Session Date  04/07/2020 10:00 AM   Central Time

Duration  00:40

Description

During my presentation, I will introduce students and their parents/caregivers to math activities/lessons they can do to explore the concept of fractions. We will use items from my kitchen to measure packages of foods to develop students' understanding of estimation, fractions and useful arithmetic. An added bonus is that packaging introduces nutrition and names of ingredients!

Once you open boxes, obvious real questions emerge like: “What is half of an animal cracker?” What should I do with the crumbs or partial pieces in a box? And more! We will explore these and more questions, and families will have the opportunity to try some of these activities out together during the session. Visuals, props, and more will be used to engage even young learners.

Key Questions

  • What fractions can you find in your kitchen?
  • What can we learn about mathematical concepts within our own homes?
  • What are some good strategies for estimating and measuring?
  • What can we learn from food's packaging?

Expected Outcomes

Students and their caregivers will learn that math is all around them, and that the kitchen is a great place to learn about fractions in particular! A general exploration of estimation and measurement and even food's packaging will help further students' mathematical knowledge.
